An example of vernacular architecture: Traditional houses of Adana, Turkey

Abstract

Traditional residential houses of Adana and unique examples of its cultural life spreads throughout the city which was the first founded on Tepebag tumulus, on the banks of Seyhan River, and reach to the present day. These structures, dated from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, have original characters in terms of plan, floors and facade and provide understanding for the daily lives of people living in this region. How was the architectural configuration of these neighbourhoods, consisting of different cultures and beliefs, in terms of urban fabric and houses? What is the significance of these structures for the city and what are their current situations? What suggestions can be developed for protecting these structures with the residents and how can they be transferred to the future generation?
