MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT IN GAZIANTEP

Abstract

Gaziantep is located between the Mediterrenian and Southeastern Anatolia regions of Turkey. It is one of the most developed cities of this region whether its industry or population.. In this study, municipal solid waste management, solid waste quality, collecting of solid wastes, transportation and waste disposal options in Gaziantep are determined and explained. In Gaziantep, 354.899 tones of solid waste were disposed in the sanitary landfill site by the year 2008. The quantity of solid waste is increased by two times in the last decade. Mazmahor Sanitary Landfill Site has an area of 32,3 ha which is enough for the disposal of solid wastes until the year 2025. Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality will gain 58 million USD in 29 years as a result of converting landfill gas to energy and rehabilitating of the site.
