A Family Magazine in the Early Republican Period: Aile Dostu (Family Friendly) and its Readership

Abstract

The magazine Aile Dostu ( Family Friendly) ) was published between 1931 and 1932 by Kemal Salih (Sel), who had taken on an important role at the newspaper Yeni G & uuml;n ( New Day) ) and its successor Cumhuriyet (Republic). . One of the purposes of this article is to analyze the magazine Aile Dostu in order to shed light on the issues of family, society, economy, and gender in the early Republican Turkey. The other one is to assess the publishing activity and readership of the magazine in the same period. In addition, it critically analyzes the advertisements and thematic content of the magazine Aile Dostu based on its publication purpose and its secular and progressive perspective that supports the monogamous and nuclear family structure of the time. The magazine's content will be examined in terms of how it reflects the impact of the Great Depression of 1929 and how it interacts with state policies. Through the regularly published Questions-Answers column, the article aims to analyze the reader profile and show the relationship that the magazine has built up with its readership. At the same time, the reader questions in the aforementioned column are considered to show how gender issues and agendas differed or resembled each other in T & uuml;rkiye in the early 1930's. Overall, this article analyzes Aile Dostu, , one of the first magazines printed in Latin letters, in order to shed light on the magazine's relationship with its readers and its readership profile, and to provide a better understanding of families and changing lifestyles in Turkey during the Early Republican Period.
