An optimization study has been performed with respect to the blast furnace to be employedfor manufacturing various sought-after products worldwide at international recognized qualitylevels by using minimum energy. Previous studies have shown that production processes werereduced, energy consumption was minimized, and at the same time, labor productivity, product efficiency and quality were increased proportionally. In this study, requiredoptimization conditions were explained and impact of optimization on production phases wasclarified accordingly. The studies performed and their results are explained below.Data pertaining to the 2nd blast furnace of Erdemir were used and reduction of the harmfuleffects of alkali was intended. As blast furnace data we used the characteristics of thecompounds and amounts of sinter, pellet, coke, ore, coal, manganese, and amounts of slagcompound and hot metal. In this study it was revealed that the amount of slag removed (2, 03kg/TSM) and the amount of hot metal (4657 tons/day) produced were increased by decreasingthe basic slag (0, 7558). Again, it was determined that, as a result of reducing the basic slag(0,7558), the slag volume (215,70 kg/TSM) and the ratio of Mn (%) in the metal decreased,ore/fuel ratio (3,04) increased, ratio of S (0,08%) in the metal did not exceed the limits butthe ratio of Si (0,687%) in the metal exceeded the limits. It was determined that the production efficiency was increased by increasing the quantity ofalkali removed with slag, the hot metal produced and ore/fuel ratio, and by decreasing the slagvolume. As a result of these studies, the following were found to be the optimum conditions: basicslag (0, 7558), amount of hot metal produced (4657 tons/day), slag volume (215, 70 kg/TSM),ore/fuel ratio (3, 04), ratio of S (0, 08%) and Si (0,687%) in the metal and the alkali removed(2, 03 kg/TSM). The ratio of the alkali removed within the slag as percentage of the alkaliinputted varies between 40-70%. It was determined that the amount of alkali in coke andsinter was high.en
