Considerations on Spanish artistic influence in the Dominican Republic during the Trujillo Era

Abstract

At a time when news of world artistic events barely reached the Dominican Republic, the fortunate arrival of Spanish artists exiled as a consequence of the civil war among others marked the start of a feast and a process of updating which had been hampered even for the best informed intellectuals. Republican artists such as Gausachs, Pascual, Vela Zanetti and Granell were thus not just the key for the population's artistic growth but also for the assimilation of principles committed to liberty in its education.
