ABSTRACT In this study, crosslinked Polymethyl methacrylate gels (PMMA) were synthesized starting from methyl methacrylate (MMA) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate monomers in toluene and in the presence of azo-bis- isobutyronitril (AIBN) as the initiator of the polymerization. The process of crosslinking polymerization and the properties of the polymer networks thus obtained were investigated by measuring the monomer conversion, the weight fraction of gel, as well as the equilibrium swelling degrees of the polymer networks. Theoretical relationship between the synthesis conditions of the polymer networks and their properties were derived and the results were compared with the obtained experimental values. The results showed that the synthesis condition of a PMMA gel of a given degree of swelling can be predicted using the model developed in this study.
