Nowadays, owing to the technological successes, computers have facilitated human works in many areas. Today, these machines are widely used in every kind of work. Employee selection is also one of these rational areas in which this facility can be used. The research made for this thesis pointed out that, an example of an integrated personnel selection system to the other human resources (HR) functions is not available in Turkey. A procedure which receives information directly from applicants is also not used. Current selection systems are used after information acquisition from applicants. The purpose of these selection systems is to transfer information to a database and to save them for further usage. Any detailed information on this subject has not been found in the world yet. The first chapter provides an introduction about applying expert system approach to personnel selection activities. Initially, the importance of personnel selection is explained. Then, all examined HR packages, personality and ability tests, that could be integrated with a further application are presented. Finally, a brief description of the proposed model and some goals in planning such a system are given. In the second chapter, a brief description about artificial intelligence is given. In addition to that, the concept of expert system and its necessity are defined. After presenting some advantages and limitations, some development tools are given. Then, the structure of expert systems and their development procedures are arranged in order. In the last part of this chapter, some utilisation areas and application examples are given. In the third chapter, current employee selection procedure is explained with all its aspects. A detailed study about selection manners that are used in three Turkish banks is summarised. In the fourth chapter, some limitations of current employee selection procedure are listed. Then, how a possible usage of expert systems in selection will be, is described. Some advantages and disadvantages of a possible implementation of personnel selection expert system are given. Furthermore, possible difficulties which can be faced with during development period are explained. In the fifth chapter, a detailed expert system model for personnel selection is presented. Then procedures and tasks to be done in using the system are proposed. Finally, the research results are given in the sixth chapter.
